Tessera Adolescent Health

Residential Rehab for Teens

When substance use or significant mental health concerns begin affecting a teenager’s safety, relationships, education, or ability to function at home, a more intensive setting may be necessary. Our residential rehab for teens provides adolescents with a place to step away from daily pressures and receive consistent therapeutic and clinical care while they work through substance use, emotional difficulties, and behaviors that may be significantly impacting their daily life.

About Our Residential Rehab for Teens

Our residential treatment gives teenagers the opportunity to focus on their health without having to navigate the same triggers and demands that may be present at home. At Tessera Adolescent Health, care is designed specifically for adolescents rather than adapting an adult program to a younger population.

Treatment can address substance use, mental health concerns, or both. While in our care, teenagers participate in therapeutic services, clinical care, and daily activities intended to help them better understand their experiences and develop skills they can use after returning home. Furthermore, families are part of the treatment process, since changes made during residential care need to translate into everyday life.

When Does a Teen Need Residential Treatment?

Residential care is not automatically the right choice for every teenager. It may be considered when a young person needs more supervision and therapeutic involvement than can reasonably be provided while living at home.

A teen may benefit from residential or inpatient treatment when they:

  • Are using alcohol, drugs, or other substances
  • Have experienced repeated relapse despite less intensive treatment
  • Are struggling with significant depression, anxiety, PTSD, or another mental health concern
  • Have difficulty maintaining safety or stability in their current environment
  • Are experiencing substantial problems at home, school, or with peers
  • Need consistent access to therapeutic and psychiatric services
  • Have co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns
  • Need time away from environmental triggers to begin making changes
  • Have not made sufficient progress through outpatient treatment alone

A clinical assessment helps determine whether residential care is appropriate and whether another level of treatment may better fit your teenager’s circumstances.

What We Treat

Sadly, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in 2024, about 20% of U.S. adolescents ages 12–17 experienced either a major depressive episode or a substance use disorder during the past year. Teenagers rarely experience substance use or emotional difficulties in exactly the same way. Some may primarily struggle with substance use, while others are dealing with mental health symptoms that contribute to or become intensified by their substance use.

Tessera Adolescent Health can provide treatment for concerns including:

  • Mental health concerns: Emotional, behavioral, or psychiatric difficulties that may interfere with a teenager’s ability to function at home, at school, or socially.
  • Depression: Persistent sadness, withdrawal, irritability, loss of interest, low motivation, and other symptoms that affect a teenager’s everyday life.
  • Anxiety: Excessive worry, panic, racing thoughts, physical tension, avoidance, and difficulty managing ongoing stress.
  • PTSD and trauma: Intrusive memories, heightened alertness, emotional detachment, avoidance, and other responses connected to traumatic experiences.
  • Alcohol abuse: Problematic drinking that affects a teenager’s health, relationships, school performance, or ability to meet responsibilities.
  • Drug abuse: Substance use involving drugs that has led to dependence and/or addiction.
  • Vaping: Nicotine or other substance use through vaping that has developed into a recurring pattern.
  • Marijuana: Frequent or problematic cannabis use that interferes with functioning, relationships, motivation, or emotional well-being.
  • Dual diagnosis: Mental health and substance use concerns occurring together and requiring treatment that considers both.

What to Expect During Residential Treatment

Entering residential treatment can feel unfamiliar at first, particularly for a teenager who has never been away from home for care. The process begins with an evaluation so that our clinical team can understand the adolescent’s history, current symptoms, substance use, family circumstances, and treatment needs.

Daily life in residential treatment includes time devoted to therapy, clinical services, skill development, and age-appropriate activities. Rather than focusing solely on stopping substance use or reducing symptoms, treatment gives teenagers opportunities to examine patterns that may be contributing to their difficulties and practice different ways of responding.

The treatment environment also provides distance from some of the people, situations, and routines that may make change difficult. With time, the focus can shift toward preparing the teenager to return home with a clearer plan for continuing care.

Therapies and Treatment Services

Residential treatment can bring several forms of care together rather than relying on one type of therapy. This makes for a well-rounded and thorough approach to care.

Services are selected according to the teenager’s needs and may include:

  • Family Therapy: Helps adolescents and caregivers work through conflict, communication difficulties, boundaries, and other relationship concerns.
  • Group Therapy: Gives teenagers an opportunity to learn and practice skills alongside peers while discussing age-relevant challenges.
  • Interpersonal Therapy: Examines relationships, communication patterns, social changes, and interpersonal experiences that can influence emotional health.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT helps teens identify unhelpful thought and behavior patterns and consider healthier alternatives.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT builds practical skills for handling intense emotions, difficult situations, relationships, and impulsive reactions.
  • Psychiatric Services: Provides psychiatric assessment and medication-related care when clinically appropriate as part of a teen’s broader treatment plan.

Family Involvement and Academic Support

A teenager’s treatment does not happen in isolation from the rest of the family. Caregivers may participate in therapy, treatment planning, education, and conversations about how to make the transition home more manageable. Additionally, academic needs are considered throughout this process. This means that school remains an important part of an adolescent’s life. Depending on the treatment setting and individual circumstances, our care team can help families consider how educational responsibilities can be addressed while the teenager receives residential care.

Continuing Care After Residential Treatment

Leaving residential treatment does not mean that treatment has to end. Returning home can introduce situations, relationships, responsibilities, and triggers that were not present in the residential setting, making continued care a vital part of the transition.

A teenager may step down to a partial hospitalization program, intensive outpatient program, or outpatient treatment depending on their progress and ongoing needs. Continued therapy, psychiatric services, family involvement, and substance use treatment can help reinforce the skills developed during residential care while gradually increasing independence.

Continuing Care After Residential Treatment

Tessera Adolescent Health provides adolescent-focused care for teenagers and families dealing with substance use and mental health challenges. Our approach recognizes that adolescents are still developing and need treatment that takes their age, relationships, education, family environment, and individual experiences into account. With multiple treatment services available, we can help families identify an appropriate path of care and guide their children to a happy and fulfilling future.

Frequently Asked Questions

The length of residential treatment depends on the teenager’s symptoms, substance use, response to treatment, and continuing care needs. Some adolescents require a shorter stay, while others benefit from more time.

Inpatient or residential treatment involves living at the treatment facility while receiving care, whereas outpatient programs allow teenagers to return home between treatment sessions. The appropriate level depends on clinical needs, safety, home circumstances, and the amount of supervision required.

Educational needs can be incorporated into treatment planning, although the specific arrangements depend on the residential program, the teenager’s circumstances, and school requirements. The goal is to address education while allowing the adolescent to focus appropriately on treatment.

Exact family visitation and communication policies vary according to the teenager’s treatment plan. However, families receive information about appropriate communication and opportunities for involvement as part of the treatment process.

Insurance coverage varies based on the plan, clinical criteria, services provided, and treatment setting. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires many health plans to provide mental health and substance use disorder benefits comparable to medical and surgical benefits, although specific coverage and eligibility requirements still vary by plan. Our team is always happy to discuss available programs, insurance benefits, and coverage considerations.
